2018 Duke Madison Memorial Scholarship Co-Recipient – Carson Caswell

Karson, the son of Richard and Martha Caswell, is a freshman percussion major at SCAPA Lafayette. He is a member of the Central Kentucky Youth Jazz Arts Orchestra, Jazz All Stars of Central Kentucky, Lafayette Jazz Ensemble, Lafayette Wind Symphony, Lafayette Marching Band Snare Line, and the Lafayette Percussion Ensemble.

Karson has returned from the 2018 Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop and here are his reflections on the week in his own words:
This summer, I had the privilege to attend the final Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop in Louisville, Kentucky. The camp was populated by people of various backgrounds, ages, and skill levels. There was never criticism or judgement, only mentoring. While at the camp, I was always learning, whether it was hands on or by observation. For example, the staff would give me helpful advice and feedback in my masterclasses and attending nightly staff concerts gave me the opportunity to observe different musical styles and forms. Even walking to and from the dorm or sharing a meal, jazz was always the topic of discussion.

The ages of my assigned combo stretched from 15 to 91 years of age! Our backgrounds and experiences varied. Nonetheless, we played and shared the same love for the music. At the end of the day, inspired by the staff concerts, using the tools acquired from our masterclasses and combos, the nightly jam sessions were powerful!

I would like to thank Dave McWhorter, Raleigh Dailey and the CKYO Jazz Arts Orchestra for recommending me to receive the Duke Madison Scholarship. Attending the camp has inspired and given me new direction as a musician. Many thanks to the Jazz Arts Foundation for this incredible experience!
